Not quite so

Posted on January 13, 2023November 28, 2023 by Thomasina Ndlovu

I was reading from the third chapter of the book of Genesis today. Just after creation the serpent finds himself in the garden trying to convince Eve to eat from the fruit. “Ye shall not surely die.” he says.

That word surely stuck with me. Not certainly. Not really. Not quite. But maybe a little bit. You won’t notice. You won’t really be swallowed whole. Just a little bit. You can fight it. But you won’t really win. Man. Let me wear my big sister shoes and address a few things here.

I know he doesn’t pray. But. Atleast he grew up in a Christian home. Salvation is personal. Don’t compromise on the big things. Rather on that they wear green sneakers. With orange checked shirts. And white trousers. We can do everything else besides sex. Girl! Shut up! Do not toy so much with the idea of how close you can come to sin without actually sinning. Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear God and depart from all evil. My budget is too steep this month. What to do now? Pay my tithe next month? And then you wonder why your cup is not filled to the brim and running over. And then you wonder why your presses are not bursting with new wine. And then you wonder why you’re not living softly.

“All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is a surrender. For it is all give and no take.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Stop surfing on the waves of desire and dive deep into the truth. The word. Your heart. Above all else. Guard it. Even fish swim against the current hunnay. I find it funny how our hearts’ postures are not in surrender to God. We want to be the cool Christians. The quite. But not quite so Christians. We blur the lines ourselves. We know what we ought to do. But we do not do it. Our conscious has been seared with a hot iron. We continue in sin, hoping for grace to abound. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? We abuse grace. Sinful Christians.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2

The world has convinced us to converse with our children and spare the rod. Gentle parenting. The world has convinced us that the wife is a husband’s equal. The world has convinced us we can do whatever we want with our bodies. Even abortion. The world has convinced us that pronouns. Her/Him/Them. Is how we ought to identify ourselves and not by character. What we stand for? The world has convinced us that talking back to our parents is being woke. The world has convinced us to speak our minds and not care about the next person’s feelings. Freedom of speech. The world has convinced us to manifest things to existence and not pray. The quite. But not quite so Christians. Partial sinners.

Dear Lord

I pray that we all strive to become like Jesus. In word. In thought. In deed. I pray we set ourselves apart to do your will. I pray we set boundaries for ourselves in every area of our lives. I pray we stop limping between two different opinions and realise we can’t serve two masters. I pray we stop being people pleasers and call out sin. I pray we honour you with our bodies. I pray we seek first your kingdom and righteousness. I pray we live by your word, a light to our paths that will help us not stumble. I pray we prefer to be misunderstood than be partial in obeying your word. I pray that we understand that you’re so much more than just a feeling. You’re our life. I pray that whatever we do, in word or deed be in your name. I pray that Jesus Christ be with our spirits. Always.
