A movie review: The idea of you

Posted on May 6, 2024May 16, 2024 by Thomasina Ndlovu

July 8th

You have a very persuasive admirer. I hope you enjoy this piece. I’m so happy it’s yours.

Sarah

It is at this moment. This very moment. I thought. It is the little things. It has always been the little things. It will always be the little things.

It is about how someone closely watches your face light up as you admire a piece of artwork in a warehouse studio. It is about them asking you how it makes you feel and listening to what you say. And what you don’t say. And acting on it. It is about them going out of their way to make sure they get you that captivating piece of art. Just because. It makes you feel ‘everything’. Now every time you catch a glimpse of it as you go grab a glass of water in the kitchen. You think about them. And your heart smiles a little as you lean on the sink.

I think about the art of consideration a lot. Have we lost it? To put the next person. Their feelings. Their happiness. Their comfort. Their peace. Their well-being? Before our own? To do something for someone. Not that you care about it. But because you care about them. Deeply. And. Truly.

Is the art of consideration something we’ll only see in the movies? Or read about in novels. Is it just an idea? An idea of you. You will never get to experience?

I hope not.

I hope you find someone who drives a hour to just give you a hug. Because you had a terrible day. I hope you find someone who sits with you on a rooftop and doesn’t mind the mosquitoes. Because they know how much you love to watch the city lights and the aeroplanes that fly at night. I hope you find someone who buys you crayons. Because they notice how obsessed you are with your colouring books. I hope you find someone who calls you in the middle of the day. Because they have to tell you how much they miss you. I hope you find someone who buys you new socks. Because winter is coming. I hope you find someone who accepts your child as their own. Because they love you that much. I hope you find someone who buys you amaskopas. Because they know how much you love them. I hope you find someone who rubs your back. Because it helps with the stomach cramps. I hope you find someone who keeps your vases full. Because it makes you happy. I hope you find someone who doesn’t find catering to you as an inconvenience. I hope you find someone who actually likes you. Enough to want to be the reason you have a smile on your face. I hope you find someone who cares about the little things when it comes to you.

The little things that are not so little.
